Abstract

Aim and background: Hepatic dysfunction during pregnancy can be a worrying prospect for any obstetrician. Narrowing down on the diagnosis can involve immense resources and clinical acumen, lack of either of which can significantly impair the outcome of the patient. Thereby, a tertiary-care hospital presents a possible way of tackling obstetric hepatic disorders and hence an attempt to list our experience in this, with the help of numerous patients studied over a course of 3 years. From more common disorders like viral hepatitis and hepatic complications of preeclampsia to rare autosomal recessive hepatic disorders, patients with diverse comorbidities have been selected to provide the best assortment of cases. Case description: To study a diverse spectrum of hepatic disorders, few of which are rare and seldom encountered in a clinician's practice. Conclusion: While most obstetric hepatic disorders are a result of extrinsic factors, a significant number of disorders are exclusively obstetric, each of which can have a say on the fetal or the maternal outcome, if not both. While hepatic disorders are not extremely common, their presentations hardly vary in most patients. Symptoms of icterus and itching are often reported, most of which have an insidious onset. Clinical significance: Liver performs several functions that vary from synthesis to metabolism to excretion, and hence, that warrants possessing knowledge about diagnosing each of these disorders by an obstetrician.
